Getting oriented in Mutriku

Mutriku’s historic centre is compact in character but steep underfoot, with lanes that lead down toward the harbour. Fires devastated the town in 1484 and 1553, while its original street layout remains.

The tourism office highlights the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, Plaza Txurruka, Galdona Palace, Arrietakua Palace, the old fish market and the Muelle tower house among the area’s heritage sites. Use these landmarks to orient your walk, then follow the sloping streets toward the waterfront.

The Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción is a National Monument designed by architect Silvestre Pérez. Construction took place from 1803 to 1843, and the church contains a painting by Francisco de Zurbarán. For more context on the church, see this visitor’s guide to Jasokundeko Andre Mari Eliza.

A walk through Mutriku town centre

A walk through Mutriku town centre

A town-centre walk can start among the historic buildings and descend through the lanes toward the harbour. Mutriku’s official guided historic-centre tour follows this route and covers the town’s architecture, maritime history and fishing heritage; it lasts 60 minutes and costs €130 per group, for up to 50 people.

Plaza Txurruka is a useful point to pause and look at Galdona Palace. The 17th-century Baroque building is distinguished by wrought-iron balconies, decorated eaves and a coat of arms at the corner.

Arrietakua Palace adds another layer to the town’s history: Antonio Gaztañeta built it in the early 18th century, and it later became the property of Cosme Damián Churruca. A separate guided palace visit lasts 90 minutes, costs €12 per person and is limited to 15 people; it is not adapted for people with reduced mobility.

Mutriku has many sloping streets, so comfortable footwear is recommended for the historic-centre tour. If you have mobility difficulties, notify the tour organizers in advance.

The official historic-centre tour ends its route toward the harbour, linking the town’s buildings with its maritime and fishing history. Following the lanes downhill gives you a natural sequence: begin among the central landmarks, then continue toward the waterfront.

The Nautilus hours guide outlines the museum’s former pattern of weekend, selected-date and high-season opening, with visits arranged at other times by booking a guided visit. Check the official site before you go for current visitor arrangements.
